Technology and innovation:
The fountain of progress.
World leading technology and innovation
From nanotechnology and microelectronics to mechanical engineering and IT – Germany is a world leader in many different areas of innovation.
The field of technology and innovation covers development and design disciplines that are used across all industries: from mechanical engineering, information and communication technology (ICT), optical technologies, systems engineering and microelectronics to automation, power electronics and nanotechnology. Through a network of internationally respected research institutes, leading clusters and initiatives with global influence, Germany is achieving a great deal in this field and offers some fantastic conference opportunities. Examples include: the OpTecBB initiative in which companies and research institutes in Berlin and Brandenburg are joining forces to improve and harness optical technologies; Hannover's Centre for Manufacturing Technology (PZH) where a wide range of organisations work and conduct research under one roof in an area of more than 20,000m²; the Rhine-Main-Neckar region known as the 'Silicon Valley of Europe'; and Silicon Saxony in the Dresden region, Europe's largest corporate network in the semi-conductor and microsystems industry. Dresden also hosts the annual 'Semicon Europa', one of the world's leading trade shows for this industry sector. Every year, visitors flock to Hannover for the famous CeBit trade fair for the digital industries and to Hannover Exhibition Centre which sees the launch of more world premieres than any other venue.
Germany not only ranks among the top four nanotechnology locations in the world, it is also the world's largest exporter with a 19.1 per cent share of the international industrial and mechanical engineering market. Microelectronics is one of the fastest growing sectors in the industry. Accounting for 5.5 per cent of the global market, Germany has the fourth largest ICT market in the world.
