International City Ranking for Sustainability

A global sustainability index now evaluates the attractiveness of event locations in accordance with objective criteria. One of the first cities in Germany to participate, Stuttgart now ranks in 4th place in the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS), thus taking on a pioneering role in international destination benchmarking.

The GDS Index advertises and promotes the sustainable development of the meetings industry worldwide. In the current ranking Stuttgart recently positioned itself in fourth place as one of the first German cities and is now among the leading pioneers in the international MICE sector. "The ranking is a good achievement and we are delighted about it. It reflects our self-image of a constantly progressing sustainability policy. This internationally standardised assessment tool for the first time gives us the opportunity of positioning ourselves on the global market as a meeting and congress destination," says Karina Grützner, Business Development Manager of the Stuttgart Convention Bureau.

The ranking was initiated by Scandinavian congress cities under the aegis of the Scandinavian ICCA Chapter and the MCI Group. In the spring of 2016 it was expanded with the support of the international trade fair IMEX and the ICCA world federation to a worldwide project. The assessment criteria comprise Environmental Performance, Social Performance, Supplier Performance and Convention Bureau Performance. An overall assessment of the city as a sustainable event destination takes into account the previous sustainability initiatives and certification programmes of the locations.
Sustainability as a worldwide benchmark and competitive advantage: The benefits gained by the destinations from the global sustainability index are eclectic. The direct comparison of their sustainability performance motivates them to constantly optimise their commitment in the "green meeting" sector. On a national level Stuttgart has been active for several years already as a sustainable destination. With the good result of this survey the city has now positioned itself on the international market.
