Planners Perspective – Behind the Scenes: HL7 and Maritim Hotel Cologne
Can you tell me a bit about Health Level Seven® and your International Conference?
Sure, HL7® was founded in 1987 and is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are a nonprofit organization that provides the comprehensive framework for and related standards for the exchange, integration, sharing and retrieval of electronic health information. The main objective of our International Conference is to advance the development of our interoperability standards and provide valuable education via our tutorials. What’s really incredible is that attendees pay a registration fee to come and essentially volunteer their time to advance these standards. Last year’s event that was held in Paris had 341 attendees from 30 countries around the world. Fifty-two percent of our attendees were from the United States.
What are some of the factors that influenced your decision to choose Cologne, Germany and the specifically the Maritim Hotel?
HL7 had a meeting in 2007 in Cologne at the Maritim, which was very successful and well attended. The hotel is located right on the Rhine River, is centrally located to old town Cologne and is within walking distance to the major attractions.
This region of Germany is also known for its innovation in the digitalization of the healthcare system. We plan on inviting local professors and strategists from the German government, as well as, strategic thinkers from the European Union in Brussels, who are only 2.5-hour train ride away thanks to Cologne’s central location. So it was an easy decision to return.
What is the scope of what Maritim is doing for your meeting?
In addition to providing accommodations, food and beverage and meeting space for 300+ attendees, the Maritim will support the extensive IT requirements that are necessary for the International Conference. Roughly 25 tutorials will be produced during this event to provide education on HL7 interoperability standards.
How have you found working with the Maritim team so far?
They were easy to work with, responsive to all our needs, and implemented changes to our entire satisfaction. We found it particularly helpful that Maritim has a U.S. sales office that was able to assist us with the RFP process from start to finish. Nothing got lost ‘in translation’. We are looking forward to our event next year in Cologne.
