Tips for Creating Experiential Magic: Maritim Hotel Pop up Immerses Guest in Alpine Charm

When the general manager for the Maritim Hotel Stuttgart visited the Austrian Alps a few years ago on holiday he came back with a “big” idea.

Inspired by the warmth, look and feel of an Alpine lodge he had visited, he wanted to create a pop up where people could enjoy the same spirit right in the heart of Stuttgart … and right outside the Maritim.

So he and his team got to work – with the help of event designers Millennium Visions – to turn this vision into a reality. 

The result is a charming 1,076 sf Alpine experience that oozes authenticity, and transports guests to the Alps for an evening through food, music, activities, decor and ambiance.

Now in its second year The Maritim Alm Stuttgart  comes to life late-October to mid-January and is booked solid with mostly corporate groups.

“I enjoy seeing the “wow” reaction on guests’ faces when they enter and spend time in the lodge,” said Helge Timm, Maritim Stuttgart’s F&B manager.   

Every authentic inch and element of the pop up reflects the Maritim’s values of hospitality and warm welcome and carries out the Alpine theme including: 

  • Creating ambiance with rustic wooden furniture, walls, floors and beams, along with  cow bells, antlers, cozy lighting, charming red & white curtains and linens, and mini outside bonfires.
  • Serving an Alpine menu including “Brettjause” (cold cuts, cheeses and snacks on a wooden platter), sugared pancake strips with raisins, and roasted pork with crackling.
  • Pouring local beers and wines from Stuttgarter Hofbräu and nearby vineyards, alongside Austrian wines and spirits from Tyrol.
  • Celebrating traditional dress with dirndl and lederhosen-clad staff.
  • Interlacing hands-on activities like keg tapping and hammering competitions along with live music.

Taking a page from what makes it such a special spot, here are some things Helge Timm, F&B manager at the Maritim Stuttgart suggests thinking about when you want to create a memorable pop up or add authentic touches to your meetings and events.

Think Immersive & Authentic – Get creative considering all the ways you can envelop your attendees with sight, sound, taste and scent. Also whatever theme or look you’re going for, be true not only to that genre or idea, but also to your brand values and goals as an organization.   

Think Unexpected  If there are ways you can leverage the element of surprise and create something delightfully different and unexpected you up the experiential quotient … big time.

Think Local Too – While authenticity is king don’t be shy about incorporating the specialties of the locale where your pop up or experience is based too.

Think Social – A pop-up or experiential space is by nature visual so leverage that on social media with photos and video before, during and after people participate. Encourage your guests to do the same.
