The initiators are the EVVC - European Association of Event Centres, the GCB German Convention Bureau and the German National Tourist Board (GNTB). Since the beginning, the annual study has been carried out by the European Institute for the Meetings Industry (EITW).

The 2020 data for the meetings, congress and events market in Germany confirms how the events sector is changing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and reveals that the industry is currently in a transitional phase towards a new normal. From 2021 onwards, the market is expected to recover under changed conditions.

In spring 2020, the EITW had already developed several scenarios for the recovery of the event market after the pandemic - these were continued and updated at the end of 2020. Depending on the further course of the pandemic as well as on medical and health economic factors, the market for meetings, congresses and events will be able to recover in a more restrained or more dynamic manner in 2021. But regardless of the speed, it is already clear that the market is changing on both the supply and demand sides.

The German meetings and conventions market set a new record in 2019, with around 423 million people attending meetings, conventions and events at German venues. However, the corona pandemic, as the defining issue at the moment, is also having a massive impact on the meetings industry. For the Meeting- & EventBarometer 2019/2020, the EITW therefore also examined the consequences of the Corona crisis on the events market in Germany.
